Today's Summary
The last day was a time for many to explore Cairo and go back to many of the sites for more indept study. A few choose the optional trip to Alexandria. Located under each subject are the pictures and a brief statement of each teacher’s trip to Egypt.
Pictured is Flat Stanley overlooking the Nile, drawn by Lucy Swecker, who was brought along on the trip as part of a class project at George Ward Elementary in Mill Creek, West Virginia. Below is the lesson plan for the book “Flat Stanley” by Jeff Brown submitted by Vickie Hinzman.
Lesson Plan:
"Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown
Listening Skills: Read Flat Stanley to the class and ask them to imagine what he looks like and visualize his activities as I read the story.
Materials: Flat Stanley
Art: After reading Flat Stanley have each student draw his/her own Flat Stanley.
Materials: white tag board, crayons, markers, pencil, crayons
English: Students write their own letters to a friend or relative. They need to include in this: 1. introduce Flat Stanley 2. tell why/what we are doing with him: sending him on a trip so he can visit a new environment; will later use this information 3. please journal the places Flat Stanley visits while his is your friend/relative. 4. Tell when Flat Stanley needs to be returned (February 29, 2000).
Use each letter to teach friendly letter format Develop paragraphs Recognize run-on-sentences Students will rewrite their letters to correct errors and off Flat Stanley goes to visit the world!!!
Materials: students’ letters, opaque or overhead projector
Math: Upon Flat Stanley’s return: Determine distances each has traveled by locating states/cities he has visited—graph these miles Compare routes on map of the USA; world map
Materials: journals from Flat Stanley’s Graph paper Road maps of USA, world
Social Studies: Discuss/locate different places each Flat Stanley has visited Regions (graph) Continents Cultures (research)
