Contributions of Ancient Egypt
..................................................................................................................................................

Target Curriculum: History

Target Grades: 2-2

SOLs:HSS 2.1

Time:Two, 30-minute lessons

Objective and Goals:
The students will identify the major contributions of ancient Egypt, including architectural monuments, e.g. the pyramids and Sphinx.

Purpose:
To help students understand the function of the pyramids as tombs for the Pharaohs.

Materials:
A master depicting examples of amulets and their symbolism, clay, amulet molds, paint, paintbrushes, oven, and paper pattern of a pyramid

Procedure:
Discuss how Egyptian amulets were carved charms made of metal, wood, faience, terra cotta, or stone. Ancient Egyptians wore amulets as charms during their lifetime and placed them in linen mummy wrappings in preparation for the next life. Amulets had specific symbolism, and certain colors and materials were believed to have special powers. Students examine a master showing amulets and their symbolism, and pick which would have the most personal significance for their "tomb." Students use the amulet molds to cast a clay model of their choice. Models will be baked to hardness and painted the next day. Students will cut, fold, and glue a paper model of a pyramid, enclosing their finished amulet.

Observation:
The teacher will observe student participation in discussion and completion of art projects.

Conclusions:
The students will identify the pyramid structure and the symbolism of amulets used in mortuary rituals.

For Your Information:
I baked the amulets at home. The students loved having a personal charm to take home.

Extension:
We continued this lesson with an examination of the specific guideline under which Egyptian tomb paintings were executed. Students then drew and painted standing figures using the identified characteristics.

Class Discussion Questions:

  1. What was the significance of the amulet that you chose for your pyramid?
  2. What other personal items would you like to include in your "tomb"?
Cautions and Concerns:
More than 30 minutes may be required depending on class size. This was a great introduction to the ancient Egypt unit.
